Raised in the DC suburbs of Maryland, Eric went on to earn a BA in Chemistry at New York University. Now residing in Brooklyn, NY, Eric works for Columbia University in Government and Community Relations. He has previous experience working with the New York City Council where he was highly successful with constituent affairs, advocacy, researching and drafting policy, press relations, and campaigning.

Eric’s vast knowledge of public service and press, as well as his dedication to serving his community makes him a wonderful addition to the Project Team Board. Please join us in welcoming him!

On behalf of the Board of Directors and volunteers of Project Team, I would like to thank all of you again for your encouragement and support.  With your help, we have mentored hundreds of youth in the region over the past seven years, teaching them the value of collaborative effort.  We have also created a network of volunteers from Universities as well as the working world, who have passionately served Project Team in Maryland, New York, and Maine.  For some, their experience has influenced them to change their career or educational path to public service.
 
We continue to do our part to make our society one that is more peaceful, cooperative, and productive through the power of teamwork.  Indeed, we do believe this is the driving force that inspires positive change.

Some of our plans for Project Team in 2011 include:

*Expansion of our program in Baltimore in partnership with the Refugee Youth Project.  This will be our first site in Maryland that will be totally operated by volunteers that are post-college.

*Our program in New York City will once again be up and running thanks to our dedicated Board members and strong network in New York.

*We will be applying for several grants so that we can achieve our long held goal of having our own office space and small staff.

*In August 2011 we will hold our second Board of Directors conference where we will work to improve program curriculum, communication systems, and fundraising strategies.

I am so excited for what lies ahead for Project Team.  But as we move forward we need your help.  Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution, which would help us to purchase program supplies, pay for a per diem grant writer, and allow us to continue to host our website online.

Wow, it has been so long. I really need to make a plan on how to keep this blog fresh!

Right now Project Team is in the equivalent of baseball’s spring training (though it is summer), as we gear up for the Fall semester and another exciting “season” of Team. This year we will celebrate our EIGHTH anniversary, which is hard to believe. We hope to build on the solid foundation we have laid over the past seven years and continue to improve the quality of our program before we expand to new sites.

Our Board of Directors is in a period of transition and I must extend enormous gratitude to all of the past Board Members who have helped make Project Team what it is. We have an excellent group of people that are remaining on our Board as well, and we are looking to add two-three more Board members over the next several months.

We are certainly going to be very busy for the next month and a half and I will do my best to keep you all informed!

We at Project Team are gearing up for another year of work in after-school programs. This year we will be focusing on expanding our services in the Baltimore area and on networking with other local organizations. I am proud to say that Project Team is one the most cost effective organizations on the planet! We have continued to mentor hundreds of youth in the Northeast with no budget to speak of. While this is quite an achievement, we will also be working to gain further funding so that we may improve the quality of our services and work towards our long term goals of hiring a staff and eventually opening our own center in Baltimore. Though it was fun on its own, the event had a purpose- to spread awareness of Project Team and to refer people to this website. We handed out flyers with a brief description of the program and the web address. Thanks to all those that helped with the event and for the folks who stopped by to high-five us!

The discussions were very fruitful and we have come up with what seems like an endless list of action steps to improve the organization. It is very exciting. Some of the topics discussed over the weekend included: Goals/Vision for Project Team, Development, Marketing, Curriculum, Metrics, Site Leader Support, and much more. It was certainly a big weekend for the program and together as a board, we have set the bar very high. We have an excellent group of committed board members and this year is sure to bring about a lot of great changes with Project Team. Also, stay tuned as we will be posting all of our notes from the retreat on the website.

We did an activity where we all got to learn some interesting things about each other. It started with volunteers writing down three facts about themselves on index cards (ie. Linh’s favorite food is BACON), then those facts were read aloud and the kids, who were already split up into groups of five had to decide as a group what facts matched which volunteer. They actually had a blast with it. The Y staff seemed to be having even more fun than the kids. Afterwards the kids got the chance to write down their facts and everyone guessed who matched what fact. This was a very simple activity and went over well. Its a good activity for us as we build stronger bonds with the kids.
